Instead, Helena captured the poor Vulpix in a Heal Ball she had just happened to pick up, and behind her father's back, took care of the Vulpix. He is still unaware of the Pokemon's presence.

She and Helena have formed a small friendship, but this is also kept a secret from Walter and Flamel. Thanatos is aware of this Pokemon, and doesn't mind letting them play around. When she is not possessing an appliance, the fourth move slot is empty. Any additional notes (items, scars, current status, et cetra)

    Quote "Father?"
History When you had agreed to meet to talk with Helena and Shadow, you weren't quite sure what you expected. Especially since it had been the Pokemon to insist on this. Not that he hadn't consulted with Helena beforehand, but still. It seemed like each time you had a Pokemon decide they needed to talk to you about their human, you ended up finding out something horrible.

When everyone was seated where they wanted to be, the Honchkrow said, "Well. Yeah, this is going to be... a story. It's... Still hard to believe sometimes, and I was there when it happened."

    "It's fine."

The young blonde teenager hadn't released her hold on a Heal Ball. Whatever the story was, she had insisted on it being just the three of you. That didn't stop her from being nervous without Heather. "... I know Chili trusts you, but..."

You tried to give her an encouraging smile, "No. Really. It's fine."

She tried to open her mouth to speak before looking away and finally saying, "Shadow? Do you mind?"

He nuzzled her for a second as he replied, "Of course not, dear." He turned to you with a sigh. "I was captured normally by Helena's father, Walter, when she was around seven years old. Her mother had just died, and between work and home-schooling her, he wanted someone else to keep an eye on her. It should have caught my attention back then. That he wanted someone who couldn't truly talk to her to be one of her main caretakers."

You were right. You weren't liking where this was going.

"When I was brought in, he basically dumped me as her sole babysitter for long periods of time," He tried to explain. "He would only spend time with her during 'school time' and making sure she was fed. Other than that... I'm not really sure what he was doing. Sometimes he stayed in and read his books or wrote, or he was gone for several hours..." He shook his head. "I forgot to mention. Their house was in the middle of nowhere in the countryside. They were completely isolated."

    That wasn't ominous.

"Yeah... I never saw any other people there. It was just Fa... Him, and me. And Flamel and Shadow." Her voice was quiet. She still wasn't looking at you.

"Mostly I just made sure she was safe as she played around the house and the nearby countryside. Which wasn't too hard. I'm..." He looked at her in concern, "Not sure if that was because of what he told her, or if it was her nature."

Given what little you had seen, you weren't sure either. She could be as cautious as she could be foolhardy when it came to her curiosity.

"I noticed that she liked reading, but for reasons I wouldn't find out until later, he wouldn't get much for her age."

"Almost everything in the house that wasn't for school was stuff all way over my head or way below even my reading level..."

"So once or twice, when I was let out to just stretch my wings, I found some books to bring back to her. I... admittedly didn't know how to tell, but they were all much thinner than the stuff he read from."

That brought a nervous smile to her face, "Mhm. And I finally got to read some new things."

"Either way... The Epidemic hit only a few years later." He asked her, "You were ten, right?"

"Y-yeah... I had... been meaning to ask him about... Pokemon journeys. The books always talked about those, and kids usually left when they turned ten, right?"

You nodded. "Sometimes older, but yes, ten is considered the earliest one could leave." She was so young... And it sounded like she had never known the normal world before so many things went wrong with it.

"Despite being in the middle of nowhere, we got the warning signs. I think Walter intended to try waiting it out. Boarded up the windows... collecting supplies and preparing to ration it out... Thankfully he was smart enough to make sure we had something that could be grabbed if we had to run. Turns out we ran out of food first..."

"It... It was strange leaving the house for the last time, and walking away from all the places I knew. And going past all the places he told me to never go... But it was exciting? I don't know... I was scared after seeing the undead, but he promised to take care of me..."

"That's... when I started noticing more strange signs. I can't blame a father who had lost his wife to be a bit protective of his only child, but... There's protective, and then there's what he was doing. For example: he didn't want her to pick up any Pokeballs. At all. Even if they were empty."

Your brows knitted together in confusion, "Why?"

"You don't know what could be in there," Helena said with a hollow tone. It sounded like she had memorized it. "But... Some of them were so pretty... I couldn't help keeping some of the ones we found."

Your eyes drifted downward to the Heal Ball, and she noticed. With a nervous laugh, she said, "Yeah... I caught Heather in one of the pretty Pokeballs. I think this is a Heal Ball? I didn't know it at the time, but apparently it heals up whatever you just caught in it."

Even though you were well aware of that fact, you still nodded along.

"Turns out that was probably the best thing I could have done for her."

    "Oh?"

Shadow took over there, "So Heather... Walter had taken one look at a starving, injured, lone Vulpix and decided that it wouldn't be worth the effort to take care of another Pokemon. He told Helena to leave her. I didn't know she did this until later, but... yeah. She caught Heather and kept her hidden in that ball. And took care of her behind everyone's backs for... A pretty long time."

"I'm sorry I hid her from you..."

"I don't blame you. You didn't know I didn't approve of his decision until later." He wrapped a wing around her for a few seconds. "Not too long after that is when we ran into Lysandre and Chili in Coumarine. They were trying to stake out a proper town... Walter jumped on the opportunity, but... It seemed like he was after something."

"He still told me to be careful around all the people... He didn't really tell me not to talk to anyone, but... He kept warning me about how we didn't really know what they wanted..."

"Yeah, that town..." Shadow sighed. "I guess in some cases, he wasn't wrong, but that wasn't the real reason he was doing that... I better start from the beginning with that particular shitshow."

Appearance Helena is at an average height and weight for a girl her age. Thanks to living in a community, she has been able to maintain a healthy and clean lifestyle, and she maintains grooming as well as she can. Her wavy blonde hair is long enough to reach her shoulders, and unless what she's doing calls for it, she leaves her hair free. She has her father's dark red eyes, but unlike him, her eyes show an anxious person. She tries to remain small and unnoticeable, partially because she doesn't want to get the attention of people who might hurt her. She wears a pink t-shirt under a light turquoise hoodie, and a toboggan hat that matches both colors. Her pants and tennis shoes are a nondescript black. She also has a pink scarf that matches the pink on the hat. The clothes are well tended and washed, and she does have more than one outfit to choose from when in the communtiy.
Religion She was never taught about higher powers beyond using them as verbal cursing, which she usually refrains from.
    Personality -Helpful
-To those who have earned her trust, or those in desperate situations.
    -Kind
    -Curious
       -To a fault
-Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back
-Helena is a curious child, and though he can keep her from asking too many questions, he can't stop her from just looking or finding things out herself otherwise.
    -Quiet
-Children were to be seen not heard, and she had no friends later on to discourage this.
    -Timid
-Easily walked over and incredibly fearful.
    -Friendly
-Once you get past her fear and suspicious nature, she's actually really nice.
    -Cowardly
-Will run from bad situations. She knows she's not strong enough to fight most people and Pokemon
-If she trusts another to protect her, she will probably dive behind them. Currently, she will always run to her father
-Defers immediately to those with stronger personalities or adults in general
-Has not had the life experiences to become defiant in any form
-A caveat to this is that she will do things against her father's wishes under certain circumstances. Her curiosity is one of the things that is strong enough to make her do what she wants. Morality and sympathy are other factors.
    -Suspicious
-Anyone who isn't her father is an unknown factor that she must be careful around. He encourages her to be wary even if people seem friendly
    -Naive
-Despite her father's warnings, she is still incredibly gullible. If she has any amount of trust in a person, they can easily pull the wool over her eyes.
-Doesn't like to fight the living
-Thinks it's pointless with undead everywhere. Has yet to meet a living that might merit fighting that she was unable to run from instead
-Doesn't like fighting the undead either, but will if she has to. See Cowardly though.
    -Socially awkward
-Due to being kept away from others for a large portion of her life, interacting with others outside of polite niceties is difficult.
    -Polite
-She is rarely, if ever, rude. This is due to not knowing how else to act and a fear of ticking off any companions.
-Not good in confrontations of any sort
-Buckles immediately if the opposing party gets too mad.
    -Desperately wants affection
-If one can get past the nervousness and mistrust, they can find that Helena is a very bright and lively child. Thanatos is the main one who has seen this, but Heather and Viola have seen it a lot as well.
Affiliations Walter- Her beloved father that she loves and respects. As much as she cares for him and doesn't know better, even she kind of senses that he's emotionally distant with her. She just thinks it's because of some failing on her part, however, and she tries her hardest to make him happy. Unfortunately, her curiosity puts her at odds with her father even though she doesn't know why half the time, and he never explains why. Instead of squashing her curiosity, this leads her to instead find out things for herself and never telling her father what she knows. This is the closest form of rebellion that she has, and she's not even doing it for rebellion's sake. She just wants to know things, but she wants her father to be happy. Needless to say, she has no idea what his intentions are for her.

-Thanatos/Shadow- Even though she can't understand a word the Honchkrow says, she deeply loves the bird. He treats her like she was one of his own children, and she latches onto that like a lifeline. She even has a name that she only calls him when not around others because the person he's named after is a "meanie." She has jokingly called him "Dad" when he fusses over her, but it has occasionally slipped out in more serious moments. He is the designated babysitter most of the time, and Walter and Flamel are not aware that he lets Helena do a lot of things that they wouldn't approve of. Like talking to other young people.

    -Chili- ???
User Notes -Old as fuck character that decided to invade my head again after years of barely thinking about her.
-That Rotom will properly join her team as plot progesses, but she might pop up every now and then before that happens.

Quote "There there, dear... I'm right here."
History Walter came from a large family, but he had been the youngest for long enough to become used to the benefits. As the baby, he got away with almost anything, and even if he had been caught red-handed, the blame always fell to one of his older siblings. Eventually, he got younger siblings, and even though he had been kicked off of the "baby" pedestal, he realized that he could easily boss the young ones around. Most of the time, they listened because he was one of the older siblings, and older siblings always knew best. It wasn't until one of them developed a spine that he had to punish them, but he made the mistake of hurting the transgressor too much. After that, he was kicked out of the house, and he left in a huff. It should have been telling how easily he burnt the bridges with his family; he never looked back, and if any of them tried to contact him, he acted as if he never knew them. Even the ones who had been on the fence about his banishment were considered useless to him, and he didn't care that he had just lost his entire family.

While life depending on himself and his Vulpix was difficult, he knew the basics. He eventually started manipulating other kids to do his bidding, and soon he was top dog again. Flamel was a sly fighter, but both of their biggest strengths was their ability to charm others. Generally, unless someone crossed him, he was pleasant and got along with others. His temper was something to be reckoned with, and his ability to hold a grudge was on par with a Ninetales. Despite all of his planning, however, he was still capable of being beaten in a fight, and one day, he accidentally angered someone much bigger and older than he was. The man nearly killed him and chased off any of his would be helpers before leaving him to die. Each time Walter shut his eyes, he wondered about the afterlife his family always blabbered about. He never thought much about it, but he highly doubted that it worked the way those idiots believed it did. As far as he was concerned, he hadn't done much wrong. However... something bothered him. There was always talk of "seeing the light," and all he could see was the dying light of the sun. His eyes blurred and soon all he knew was darkness.

When he next regained consciousness, he was in a white room surrounded by strange smells and sounds. Walter figured out that he must be alive, but he wasn't sure how. He was sure that he had died, but how did he come back? He recieved his answer when a doctor walked into the room. At first, he couldn't understand anything due to being on heavy medication, but eventually, he was cognizant enough to put meaning to the words the doctors and nurses said. Thanks to his youth, he was able to make a full recovery with little to remind him of the incident other than scars. And the memories of how he nearly died. The bleakness of the other side haunted him. He didn't want to simply fade out of existence, so he made a decision. He would find a way to become immortal.

Since he lived in Johto at the time, Ho-oh's legend caught his attention first, and he decided to look into the legendary Pokemon of the various regions. He decided to hide his intentions behind a mask of researching history, and he went through all the motions to finally become a researcher.  Even though Walter no longer put stock into beliefs involving the afterlife, there were some interesting ideas about the powers of the legends in a lot of the old stories. Even if they weren't gods, they had power, and the ones that caught his attention most were Ho-Oh, of course, Xerneas, and Manaphy. Ho-Oh had the ability to come back to life regardless of circumstances, and the phoenix apparently could bring back the dead. In one case, it apparently even created more legendaries when it did this. Xerneas was a force of life that was also capable of bringing back the dead, but what caught Walter's attention the most was the fact that the deer supposedly could grant immortality. Was this something that he had to earn? Or was it something he could emulate without their presence?

Either way, he would need something to give him more time. This was what caused his interest in Manaphy. The Pokemon supposedly had the ability to switch bodies, and he realized a very important use. If he had to, he could switch bodies with a younger person to extend his life. Unfortunately, he had to do investigations of his own outside of the usual legends, and that made his position as as a credible researcher a bit precarious. He finally got something out of a passing "witch" that she claimed would work. He was told it would be easier to switch into the same species, and that he needed a Passho Berry, a King's Rock, and a Water Gem for the spell to work. With this back up ready, he continued his research and traveled to the different regions.

His travels were long, but despite all his efforts, he came up short. He became aware of how he was getting older, so he decided to have a family. All he had to do was ensure that his child wouldn't be missed when the inevitable switch came. However, of course, he first had to find a wife. To this day, he is unsure how it fell so perfectly into place that such a naive woman wandered into his life, but she fell for his charms. He saved her from a few dangerous Pokemon, and she was like putty in his hands. He just had to give a few well-placed compliments and act interested whenever she blathered on about whatever was on her mind. Even after all this time, he did still know how to put on a charming front. Eventually, one thing lead to another, and they were "happy parents."

During this time, Maria's rose tinted glasses started to come off as Walter spent less and less time with her and started showing his irritation with her more often. She began noticing red flags that she had once ignored, and realized that she and her child were involved with someone who was not who they seemed to be. When she gave birth, Maria adored her baby, but Walter, while happy... still seemed so distant. If Maria couldn't do something, he would do it, but there was something missing in his interactions with his child. There was no affection nor a proud gaze. He was satisfied, but nothing more. Taking care of their daughter kept her from thinking on it too much, however. Since their house was so far from other people, he suggested that when Helena was old enough, they could homeschool her, and Maria agreed.

As their daughter grew, Walter still didn't seem to engage well with her, and spent even less time with Maria. It felt like she was the only one taking care of her, and she couldn't really ask someone else for help. His behavior worried her, but it wasn't until she stumbled across one of his notes on body switching that she realized that there was something horribly wrong. Walter wasn't aware of this change in her until he caught her with a bag on the way to Helena's room. Once she uttered that she knew, he realized he couldn't let her live. He didn't know how Helena didn't hear her mother yelling before he chased the woman out of the house and over a cliff, but he wasn't going to complain. The police didn't dig very deep into the death either. Since she had been noted as unhappy, the death was ruled a suicide.

Unfortunately, that left Walter with having to raise a seven year old on his own. Which he definitely hadn't planned for. He took up being her teacher, but he put the bare minimum effort into it. She already knew the basics of reading and math, thank the gods, but he had to make sure she learned more advanced concepts. He needed to keep her out of school and dodging truancy was risky. She was a bright student, so the minimum effort went further than he thought it would. Despite spending time with her, he still felt nothing beyond some irritation that he had to go through the motions. Eventually, he decided he wanted time to himself, and caught a Pokemon to take care of her. A Honckrow seemed to suffice. He used a TM on it that would let the bird pick the kid up if she fell, and to physically restrain her if he needed it.

Walter had put off using the spell since he wanted his new body to be mostly mature when he finally came into it, and he had entertained the idea of using the spell on Maria to test it out. Unfortunately, the woman's untimely rebellion ended that plan, but it didn't matter. He still had his daughter. He protected her viciously from outsiders. Even if said outsiders weren't actually threats, but she didn't need to know that. He kept her away from others as much as he could, but then something terrible happened in the balance of the world to ruin his plans. Sickened Pokemon came by and attacked, but that wasn't what scared even Walter. It was the fact that some of them didn't stay dead and came back. It wasn't the glorious immortality that Walter sought, either. With their minds gone, it was just as bad as being dead. Eventually, even their secluded home had to be evacuated, and the pair ran. Even though Walter wanted to keep his daughter separate from others, he started to realize that if he was to keep her, and therefore himself, alive, then he needed to find others to help with that. It was almost unbelievable when they found a strange tall man organizing a town into a safe haven, but Walter jumped at the opportunity. Later on, Walter found out that there was an unknown benefit to his decision, and maybe his goal was a little closer at hand than he thought. Now, he only had to find out how to take it...
Accent He keeps his voice neutral.
Appearance Walter is a taller man with shorter blonde hair that he keeps neatly arranged. He is surprisingly fit, but he's mostly lean muscle and not bulky. He generally has a pleasant smile on his face when possible, though it does fade into more cool expressions when he's tired. He leans towards more dressy clothing, and is often found in a dark purple button up shirt and black pants.
    Religion Nihilism? Kinda sorta.
    Personality -Protective
-As long as something holds value to him, he will do his best to defend it
    -Manipulative
-He plays Helena like a fiddle, and will do the same to everyone he meets. His plans cannot be interfered with, so he does what he can to make people not interfere.
-Everything is a tool to be used or thrown away
-His care for others hinges on if they serve a purpose to him. If someone he needs to focus is having an emotional breakdown, he will feign concern in an attempt to make them calm down more quickly
    -Puts on an amiable face
-It's easier to draw flies with honey than vinegar.
       -Can be charming
    -Delusional
-He thoroughly believes in magic. Of course this is all fake.
-He knows that people would frown upon his intentions and actions, so he keeps those thoughts to himself
       -Things occasionally slip out thought
-Laughing at inopportune moments or at inappropriate things
    -Strict
-Anyone who knows what normal is can tell that he is way too strict and controlling with Helena.
    -Impatient
-If something needs to be done, he wants it done now.
-Doesn't take kindly to his orders being ignored.
    -Possessive
-Don't you dare touch his stuff without his permission. This includes Helena, though he goes about this differently with her.
-His constant warnings to her involving the other people and her belief that he is always right makes it so that she keeps people away herself. Unfortunately, her curiosity has drawn her to other living beings, and she is capable of making friends.
    -Selfish
-Everything has to serve a purpose for him, or he won't care one bit about it.
-What's the point of serving others? There's no karmic retribution to enforce it.
    -Afraid
-He is terrified of death because he doesn't believe in an afterlife. When he almost died, he thought he did and saw nothing on the other side.
    -Emotionally distant
-Despite his words and actions, he doesn't truly care for others. In the end, all that matters is what he wants, and he can't be bothered to take on others' emotional baggage. Why should he if they're all just tools?
Affiliations -Helena- His daughter, and his target for the body switch spell. As far as he is concerned, her continued existence is his continued existence, so even if he is emotionally distant with her, he cares about her and her quality of life.
User Notes -Old as fuck character part 2.
-Just in case I need to spell it out, this "Spell" only exists in the dimensions of a delusional mind and will not work even if he succeeds in the casting.
-Also, the bits about Manaphy being able to switch bodies is only something that the cult believed and isn't a confirmed or denied thing.
-Afterlife and all that is something not really covered on EJ, but it is worth mentioning that in Walter's case, he just passed out. He didn't actually die and "see the other side."
-Putting the picture credits here: The individual images were were not made by me. I used an image made from this trainer creator. The person who made it is joy-ling. According to the information on the page for the creator, they don't care if people use the images created as long as they aren't being sold. All I did was remove the background so that it could be used on EJ.
-The dual image's lineart was drawn by Blackswann on Flight Rising and Tumblr

Is this one of those moments where your old character wants to be put in use?
